The Story of Cirrus Flux - Matthew Skelton - Puffin, 2009
* * *
After Endymion Spring, which I rather liked, this one was a bit of a disappointment. In an alternative eighteenth century London, 11 year-old Cirrus Flux lives in an orphanage with his friend Bottletop. His father has left a locket for him that various sinister people, including a man with a fire-breathing bird, an “animal magnetist” called Mrs Orrery and Mr Sidereal, possessor of a camera obscura that puts modern spy satellites to shame, are eager to acquire. The use of eighteenth century technology is great, but the characters are a little simplistic, the story is predictable and the maguffin is vague.
